Social Media Prompts for Stories

Start telling your story with these tips and tricks

The Here for You Campaign aims to highlight the amazing work happening in Community Education departments across the state of Minnesota. You can use these resources to help share stories from within your classes and programs to shine a spotlight on your programs, teachers, students, and community!

Here are 15 tips for ideas to help you find the stories to tell in your communities:

  • 1
    Spotlight your youngest learners!
Early childhood and preschool programming is an amazing service provided by school districts and community education departments. Make sure you get permission to share photos of participants and spotlight a day in the life of these classes on social media!
  • 2
    Focus on hands-on experiences!
People learn in different ways and community ed provides a wide variety of hands-on learning opportunities. Show them off in pictures and go beyond the catalog description to highlight what the class is all about.
  • 3
    Highlight longtime community members!
Senior citizens and longstanding members of your communities have great stories to tell. Put together a short questionnaire and feature some participants or teachers who have been in your community a long time!
  • 4
    Introduce your new neighbors!
We have seen some incredible stories from people who are new to the community. Whether they are relocating from another city or state, or even immigrating from a different part of the world, sharing these stories helps to connect your community with the desire to participate and learn together.
  • 5
    Bring people together with music!
Do you have an upcoming music class or performance? Use video to highlight the music being made to give a preview of what to expect.
  • 6
Show the class from a student perspective!
Tired of creating content for social media? Turn over control to a student for a bit to have them show the class from their point of view.
  • 7
    Give a facility tour!
Do you have a space that you are proud of? Maybe it’s a cool classroom or community area that not everyone has experienced. Fire up the video camera and have someone give a quick guided tour to show it off to your community.
  • 8
    Dive in the deep end!
Does your program offer aquatics or swim lessons? These are incredibly important to families in your community, so feature these offerings in your social media.
  • 9
    Focus on fun!
Athletics and recreation programs are full of learners of all ages strengthening their skills, practicing their sport, and doing what they love. There are lots of ways to highlight these on social media, from photos and videos to play by play commentary.
  • 10
    Go beyond the catalog!
Sharing class descriptions on social media is a start, but you can do more to highlight programs. Start building a library of photos and participant testimonials in a variety of classes to provide a real-life perspective.
  • 11
    The more time the better!
Give plenty of time to promote your upcoming programs. On social media, you should post multiple times in the weeks leading up to a program start date to ensure everyone has a chance of seeing at least one post on their feed. After all, people usually need to be reminded in order to take action.
  • 12
    Capture the moments!
It’s easy to stop talking about an opportunity once a deadline has passed, but capturing photos of your programs and sharing them afterwards can help people picture themselves participating next time. If you have late registration availability or drop-in classes, this could seal the deal on someone signing up.
  • 13
    Pass the microphone!
Need a fresh voice to tell your story? Find participants who want to share their story from their perspective. Let an adult with disabilities share what community education means to them, ask a young family why they participate, or find a group of senior citizens to shine a light on their favorite programs.
  • 14
    Ask the audience!
Use social media as a surveying and polling tool by asking questions of your community. What classes do they want to see? What is missing from the community? What is keeping them from being able to participate? Find out with social media!
  • 15
Get a good start on it!
Are you pulling together your next community ed catalog? Get your upcoming posts ready at the same time. Use photos from previous classes and schedule posts to go live before registration deadlines to get the word out and save yourself time to do other fun posting.
